SON Faculty, Staff and Affiliates,

Beginning November 12th, 2018, you will be required to use 2-Step Verification to access Office 365 — this includes Outlook, Heelmail, and Teams.

Enroll now for 2-Step for Heelmail

Don’t wait until the last minute — you can opt-in and begin using 2-Step for Office 365 now and avoid the frustration later!

  1. Visit onyen.unc.edu and click on “2-Step Verification for Office365.”
  1. Follow the quick on-screen prompts to turn on 2-Step.
  1. Visit office.unc.edu to complete 2-Step enrollment. You will need your mobile device(s) to complete this step.

Please note: if you use a third-party app, such as Apple Mail, on your laptop or mobile device you will need to generate an app password for it to work with 2-Step. You can generate the app passwords during the enrollment process, or you can retrieve the passwords after enrollment. Step-by-step instructions can be found by visiting https://help.unc.edu/help/mfa/

Reminder: Two ways to 2-Step

For Office 365/Heelmail, the University uses the built-in Microsoft tool for 2-Step Verification. For all other uses, such as student financials in ConnectCarolina, the University uses Duo Security. Each of the two platforms has its own separate registration process.

You need to complete the steps above to enroll in 2-Step for Office 365, even if you have already registered for Duo.

Having more than one way to verify your identity might seem confusing at first, but these two industry-standard tools are the most effective ways to protect your accounts. To learn more about 2-Step at UNC, visit its.unc.edu/2-step.

 Need help?

If you need help with the registration process, use the documentation available at: help.unc.edu/help/mfa/. You can also live chat with the ITS Service Desk, call 919-962-HELP or visit us in person in 308 Carrington Hall for assistance.

Please note that anyone with an active student affiliation may be subject to this 2-Step requirement earlier than November 12th.
