Beginning November 12th, 2018, you will be required to use 2-Step Verification to access Office 365 — this includes Outlook, Heelmail, and Teams.

Enroll now for 2-Step for Heelmail 

Don’t wait until the last minute — you can opt-in and begin using 2-Step for Office 365 now and avoid the frustration later! 

  1. Visit and click on “2-Step Verification for Office365.” 
  1. Follow the quick on-screen prompts to turn on 2-Step. 
  1. Visit to complete 2-Step enrollment. You will need your mobile device(s) to complete this step. 

Please note: if you use a third-party app, such as Apple Mail, on your laptop or mobile device you will need to generate an app password for it to work with 2-Step. You can generate the app passwords during the enrollment process, or you can retrieve the passwords after enrollment. Step-by-step instructions can be found by visiting 

Reminder: Two ways to 2-Step 

For Office 365/Heelmail, the University uses the built-in Microsoft tool for 2-Step Verification. For all other uses, such as student financials in ConnectCarolina, the University uses Duo Security. Each of the two platforms has its own separate registration process. 

You need to complete the steps above to enroll in 2-Step for Office 365, even if you have already registered for Duo.  

Having more than one way to verify your identity might seem confusing at first, but these two industry-standard tools are the most effective ways to protect your accounts. To learn more about 2-Step at UNC, visit
